Cyclic carbonates include five-membered, six-membered, seven-membered carbonates and macrocyclic carbonates with seven or more members, among which propylene carbonate and ethylene carbonate are the most widely used. Ethylene carbonate is an excellent polar high-boiling point solvent and surfactant raw material, commonly used in plastics, printing and dyeing, polymer synthesis, gas separation, and electrochemistry.

Application

1. Electrolytes: These are used in lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, though caution is needed with graphite anodes due to co-intercalation issues.

2. Solvent: High polarity makes it ideal for polymers, gas treatment (CO₂/H₂S absorption), cosmetics, and industrial cleaners.

3. Chemical Synthesis: Reaction medium for organic reactions, including polymerization and transesterification.

4. Plasticizer: Enhances flexibility in polymers and polyurethanes.
