Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), also known as tert-butyl methyl ether, a colorless liquid, is an aliphatic ether and volatile organic compound (VOC). It is moderately soluble in water and very soluble in some organic solvents such as alcohol and diethylether (ATSDR, 1996). It is a flammable liquid with a characteristic odor.
Used as a gasoline additive to replace unleaded gasoline;
Mainly used as a gasoline additive to increase octane rating, and can also be cracked to produce isobutene;
This product is mainly used as a gasoline additive and has excellent anti knock properties. It has good miscibility with gasoline, low water absorption, and no pollution to the environment. MTBE can improve the cold start characteristics and acceleration performance of gasoline without any adverse effects on air resistance. Although methyl tert butyl ether has a low calorific value, driving tests have shown that using gasoline containing 10% MTBE can reduce fuel consumption by 7% and significantly reduce lead and CO emissions, especially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in exhaust gases. As an organic synthesis raw material, high-purity isobutene can be produced. It can also be used for the production of 2-methylacrylaldehyde, methacrylic acid, isoprene, etc. In addition, it can also be used as an analytical solvent and extractant.
Solvent. Used as a stripping agent in chromatography, especially in high-pressure liquid chromatography. Organic synthesis. Octane booster in unleaded gasoline.;
